The People's National Party(PNP) was formed in 1938 with Norman Washington Manley as leader.
The Jamaica Labour Party(JLP) was formed in 1943 under the with William Alexander Bustamante as its leader.
There have been fifteen general elections in Jamaica, the
JLP winning seven and the PNP winning eight.
Jamaica's first election is the only one in which candidates independent of the JLP and PNP have gained seats.
Elections are held every 5 years although they can be called earlier at the discretion of the sitting Prime Minister.
Donald Sangster (JLP) is the shortest serving Prime Minister. His term of office lasted from February 23, 1967 until his death on April 11, 1967.
Percival Noel James Patterson was the longest serving Prime Minister. He served from March 30,1992 until March 30, 2006.
Portia Simpson Miller became first female Jamaican Prime Minister on March 30, 2006.
