Fast facts

  • Herb McKenley(1922-2007) is the only Olympic athlete to make the finals of the 100, 200 and 400 metre events. He medalled in the 100 and 200 and came fourth in the 200.
  • Lennox Miller (1946-2004) and his daughter Inga Miller(U.S. 4x100 gold medallist), are the first father daughter to win Olympic medals.
  • Donald Quarrie is the first Jamaican to win the 200 metres.
  • Merlene Ottey is the first female from the English speaking Caribbean to win an Olympic medal and at age 40 in Sydney was the oldest track medalist ever. In 2008, she failed by 0.028 seconds to make the Slovenia Olynpic team.
  • David Weller is the only non-track and field Jamaican medal winner.
  • Deon Hemmings is the first female athlete from the English-speaking Caribbean to win an Olympic gold medal.
  • James Beckford is the only Jamaican to win a medal in the long jump.
  • Veronica Campbell-Brown is the first Jamaican female to win the 200 metres. She is also the only the second athlete to win back to back 200 metres Olympic titles.
  • Usain Bolt became the first man to win all three sprint events at a single Olympics since Carl Lewis in 1984. He was also the first man in history to set world records in all three at a single Olympics. He was eliminated in the first round of the 200 metres heats at the 2004 Athens Olympics.
